Annual Awards Dinner Planning 


The NCAEHA Annual Awards Dinner committee is hard at work with the planning of our Annual Dinner which occurs late each summer. The committee is led by the VP of Membership, Mr. Arian Gibson from the District of Columbia Health Department. The committee consists of the Past Chapter President, Victoria Griffith as well as two additional committee volunteers; Rachel Stradling of the Alexandria Health Departmant and Ellen Schroth of the company Foodsense. Ms Rachel Stradling moved to the USA in 2011, following an extensive career spanning over 15 years in the UK. Prior to her move, Ms Stradling managed her own successful consulting company for over 5 years in London. She has been working for the Alexandria Health Department since July 2012, and following promotion twelve months ago, is the Environmental Health Supervisor. Ellen Schroth, RS, is President of Foodsense™,Inc., a food safety consulting and training firm in the Washington, D.C. area. Ellen is a Registered Sanitarian and a NSF Certified HACCP Manager and Trainer. She is s long standing member of NCAEHA and also a Past Chapter President.

Recent Certifications // NCAEHA


On April 29th and 30th NCAEHA in conjunction with the Alexandria Health Department, offered the Certified Pool Operator Course. 34 people from several local health departments (Alexandria, Arlington, DC, Montgomery Co., MD, Loudon), military regulators,  and staff from parks and rec (DC, Alexandria) attended the course which was well received.



Additionally, on May 22, 2014, NCAEHA offered both the REHS and CP-FS exams. Four individuals sat for the REHS exam and 4 individuals sat for the CP-FS exam. We wish them good luck and high scores!!!

2013 Annual Awards Dinner // Recap


On July 18, 2013 NCAEHA hosted its 2013 Annual Awards Dinner at the Pavilions of Turkey Run in McLean, VA. Over 30 guests attended the event, which honored a local student pursuing a career in environmental health, the NCAEHA 2013 Jerrold M Michael Award Recipient, NEHA Certificate of Merit recipients as well as the 2013 NCAEHA Board Members. The buffet dinner, provided by JR’s Picnics, included grilled marinated skirt steak, shrimp kabobs and chicken breast, seasonal vegetables, garlic roasted mashed potatoes and freshly baked rolls. To top off the meal, an Edy's Ice Cream Sundae Bar provided chocolate, vanilla or swirl ice cream along with a selection of toppings. Drink service was also provided, with several wine and beer selections to help celebrate the night’s awardees.


In addition to recognizing NCAEHA members and their contributions to the field of environmental health, Shannon McKeon, the NCAEHA President, provided a summary of the 2013 Annual Report as well as details surrounding the 2013 Fall Educational Conference and a few upcoming NCAEHA initiatives. Bob Custard, NEHA First Vice President, provided a NEHA update with a national and local perspective. Additionally, Mr. Wordsworth was present to award the scholarship to our recipient and provide words of inspiration.

Meet Your NEHA Region VP // LCDR James Speckhart


LCDR Speckhart is a Va. Beach, VA native. He holds a BA degree from Longwood University and MS in Environmental Health - Old Dominion University 2005. 


He was previously employed in private sector consulting from 2005 to 2008 conducting mold, asbestos, and other IAQ hazards assessments within NC, SC, and VA. 


In 2008, he was commissioned with the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS) as an Environmental Health Officer. His first assignment with USPHS from 2008-2013 was with the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska and Virginia. He performed diverse environmental health and industrial hygiene field based service functions. His current assignment to U.S. Dept of Agriculture – Food Safety Inspection Service began in the spring 2013. These duties encompass the evaluation of employee workplace occupational safety in animal processing establishments.   


He has been an active NEHA member since 2003 and secured an elected national board leadership position with NEHA as Region 8 Vice President in October 2012 for a 3-year term ending in 2015. 


His leisure time focuses on outdoor sports, playing music, and spending time with his girlfriend Kimberly Ann. His immediate family includes parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews in the VA and NC region.
